Creating Daily on the Premise. Est. 1871
Cakes, Savouries, Scones, Speciality Teas and Coffee. Established in 1871. In 1871 the founders came over as refugees from Paris, as they were French communards during the Siege of Paris. There was a big flow of immigrants that came to this country. Mr Bertaux set up Maison Bertaux and it must have been the first French patisserie in the UK.
Mr Bertaux would bake downstairs, the family would live upstairs and above that a tailor and a “lady of the night”.
In 1909 Mr Bertaux advertised for someone else to take over the business. Mr Vinyard came and later Michele Wade started as a Saturday girl for his son.
