About The Shan State

Specialties: Jump on board the Burmese bandwagon and discover one of this year’s hottest foodie trends at The Shan State on Shaftesbury Avenue.
From unique tea leaf salads to wow-factor fruity ice-cream desserts, The transports classic Burmese cuisine with a modern twist to the heart of Chinatown. Established in 2017. At the end of 2016 The Evening Standard declared Burmese food as “set to be London’s hottest food trend” thanks to a plethora of cool pop-ups and supper clubs appearing across the Capital. It comes with perfect timing that Chinatown welcomes its first ever Burmese restaurant, The Shan State, adding to the area’s ever-growing portfolio of pan-Asian eateries.

The Shan State is part of Myanmar (formerly Burma) and borders China, India and Thailand. As such, its cuisine is informed by its neighbours, resulting in a gloriously schizophrenic mish-mash of Asian flavours and ingredients. The restaurant, The Shan State is situated on Shaftesbury Avenue and showcases a greatest hits menu of traditional Burmese dishes like the iconic Laphet. Made from fermented tea leaves, it’s a salad like no other accompanied with peanuts, dried prawn, garlic and tomato.
